Part 1 of a 3-Tier Global Pathway

Completion of Level 1 awards a Certificate of Participation and opens the participant’s pathway to:
  • Level 2 – Applied Diplomatic Skills: Operational Excellence
  • Level 3 – Advanced Diplomatic Leadership: Strategic Statecraft
Programme graduates are also eligible to apply for IDU membership and access the global IDU diplomatic network.

Curriculum: What Will Be Offered

The Level 1 curriculum is structured across three core pathway components delivered through high-engagement masterclasses, simulations, and labs.

1. Systemic Literacy – Global Governance and Public International Law

Understanding the architecture of the international system
  • The architecture of the United Nations system and its principal organs
  • The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations — its legal foundations and practical application
  • Key actors in international relations: States, Intergovernmental Organisations (IGOs), and Non-State Actors
  • The foundations of Public International Law and treaty obligations

2. Operational Protocol – Diplomatic Conduct and Ethics

Mastering the practical mechanics of diplomatic engagement
  • Rules of precedence, titles, and formal forms of address
  • Technical diplomatic writing: drafting Note Verbales, Aides-mémoires, and briefing papers
  • Confidentiality, neutrality, and professional integrity in the field
  • Diplomatic immunity: its scope, limitations, and ethical application

3. Intercultural Fluency and Cross-Cultural Communication

Essential interpersonal competencies for high-stakes diplomatic environments
  • Navigating high-context vs. low-context cultural norms
  • The art of active listening and non-verbal communication in negotiation
  • Developing diplomatic nuance in diverse cultural settings
  • Soft power and its strategic role in shaping diplomatic outcomes

The Two-City Experience

Honorary Members serve as advisors and goodwill representatives of the Union. Supporting Membership — Open to foundations, academic institutions, NGOs, and private sector partners committed to advancing IDU’s programmes and initiatives. Student Membership — Open to those who complete the IDU Diplomatic Excellence and Statecraft Programme.
